Meta, headed by Mark Zuckerberg, has commenced trials of its innovative generative AI chatbot, dubbed as ‘Meta AI’, on Instagram. Functioning akin to existing chatbots, Meta AI possesses the capability to compose poetry, generate images, and provide responses based on a single text input. This trial follows Meta’s recent introduction of its AI chatbot to select users in regions such as India and beyond.

In a statement to Engadget, Meta confirmed the ongoing development, stating, “Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in various phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity.”

Initially reported by TechCrunch, Meta’s AI chatbot was observed in the main search bar, although subsequent reports indicate its presence within the Instagram DM search bar. Engadget elaborated that users could engage with the Meta AI chatbot directly from their DM by clicking on its icon, simulating a conversation akin to chatting with a friend.

Notably, social media users have shared experiences wherein the Meta AI chatbot aids in navigating reels on specific topics, potentially diminishing reliance on Instagram’s search function.

‘Meta AI’ – What is it ?

Introduced during the Meta Connect 2023 event in September last year, Meta AI represents a pivotal addition to Meta’s suite of social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Demonstrating a commitment to integrating generative AI experiences across its services, Meta aims to enhance user interactions and engagement.

Leveraging a proprietary model founded on Llama 2, a generative text model, and Meta’s Large Language Model (LLM) research, Meta AI endeavors to facilitate seamless conversational exchanges. Furthermore, Meta has collaborated with Microsoft’s Bing to embed real-time information retrieval capabilities into text-based interactions.

Meta envisions its AI assistant as a versatile tool capable of providing assistance across various scenarios, including offering recommendations, providing entertainment, resolving disputes, and disseminating knowledge. This strategic move underscores Meta’s dedication to enhancing user experiences and fostering deeper engagement within its social media ecosystem.
