The Delhi High Court dealt a significant blow to Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday by dismissing his plea challenging his detention by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Excise Policy money laundering case. The court asserted that evidence collected by the ED indicates Kejriwal’s involvement in formulating the excise policy and utilizing illicit proceeds. Additionally, he is purportedly implicated in seeking kickbacks both personally and in his capacity as AAP’s national convenor.

The High Court emphasized the legality of recording the approver’s statement and highlighted the established legal framework surrounding such procedures. It dismissed assertions of political interference and underscored the judiciary’s commitment to upholding legal principles over political considerations. Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma pronounced the verdict after comprehensive arguments from both sides.

Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, questioned the timing and motives behind the arrest, alleging an attempt to undermine democratic processes and weaken AAP. However, the Enforcement Directorate countered, emphasizing Kejriwal’s disregard for investigative summons and asserting that his arrest followed due process.

The ED further alleged AAP’s complicity in money laundering through Kejriwal, implicating the party in utilizing illicit funds for electoral purposes. The agency highlighted the significant financial gains AAP purportedly secured from the Delhi Liquor Scam, suggesting a violation of anti-money laundering laws.

The court’s decision, following extensive arguments and scrutiny of evidence, underscores the legal intricacies surrounding Kejriwal’s arrest and the ongoing investigation.
